How Long Does a Custom Pet Portrait Take? A Complete Timeline
Share
Ordering a custom pet portrait is different from buying ready-made wall art. Your piece begins with your pet’s photograph, moves through a design review, and is produced only after you approve the composition. That extra care takes time, but it also gives you a chance to check the most important details before production begins.
At Papaws LAB, most custom pieces follow the same basic timeline: photo submission, design proof, customer approval, production, and shipping. The total time depends partly on how quickly the proof is approved and partly on the complexity of the finished piece.
The custom pet portrait timeline at a glance
- Order processing: 1–2 business days after the order is placed.
- Digital proof: prepared after we review your photo and customization details.
- Production: typically 4–12 business days after you approve the proof.
- Shipping: typically 5–12 business days after dispatch.
The proof-review period is not included in the 4–12 business-day production estimate. A quick approval keeps the order moving, while requested revisions add time before production starts.
Step 1: Choose and upload your pet photo
A clear reference photo helps the design process begin smoothly. The best image usually shows your pet’s face, markings, and expression in natural light. It does not need to be a professional photograph, but the important details should be visible and in focus.
If you are unsure which image to use, read our guide to choosing a photo for a custom pet portrait. You can also provide an optional background reference for selected portrait styles if you want the composition to follow a particular mood, landscape, or work of art.
Step 2: We review the order
Orders are normally processed within 1–2 business days. During this stage, we check the uploaded photo, selected size, product options, and any notes you included. If an image is too dark, cropped too closely, or missing an important feature, we may contact you before the design begins.
Replying promptly to any photo question is one of the easiest ways to prevent delays.
Step 3: Review your digital proof
Every custom portrait includes a digital proof before physical production. This is your opportunity to check the overall composition, your pet’s appearance, and the selected background or style.
Look carefully at the features that make your pet recognizable: ear shape, facial markings, eye color, coat pattern, and expression. If you want an adjustment, send clear and specific feedback. A note such as “please keep the white marking above the left eye visible” is more useful than a general request to make the portrait look different.
Production begins only after you approve the proof. Because of this, the approval date—not the original order date—is the starting point for the production estimate.
Step 4: Your custom piece enters production
After proof approval, production typically takes 4–12 business days. The exact time depends on the product, size, finish, and design complexity.
For a custom freeform pet rug, the approved image must be translated into shape, color areas, and tactile detail. For a custom pet canvas portrait, production follows the approved composition and selected surface finish. These pieces are made for one customer and one pet, so they cannot be pulled from ready-made inventory.
Step 5: Shipping and tracking
Once the finished piece has been packaged and dispatched, standard delivery typically takes 5–12 business days. You will receive a shipping confirmation email with a tracking link. Tracking information may take 24–48 hours to update after the confirmation is sent.
Delivery timing can vary because of carrier conditions, destination, and seasonal volume. Papaws LAB currently ships within the United States. For the latest details, review our shipping policy.
How to avoid unnecessary delays
- Upload the clearest photo available. Avoid screenshots, heavy filters, and images in which part of the head is cut off.
- Check your email after ordering. We may need a better photo or clarification about your customization.
- Review the proof carefully and promptly. Production cannot begin until the proof is approved.
- Combine revision notes into one message. A complete list is easier to apply than several separate requests.
- Order early for gifts and holidays. Seasonal carrier volume may extend both production and delivery times.
Frequently asked questions
When does the 4–12 business-day production period begin?
It begins after you approve the digital proof. Time spent waiting for your approval or completing requested revisions comes before production.
Can production begin before I approve the proof?
No. The proof is designed to prevent blind production. We wait for your approval before the physical piece is made.
Can I request changes to the proof?
Yes. Send specific feedback about the composition or visible pet details. Revisions may extend the pre-production stage.
Do you offer expedited shipping?
Expedited shipping is not currently available. Orders use standard delivery services.
How far in advance should I order a custom pet gift?
Allow time for order processing, proof review, 4–12 business days of production, and 5–12 business days of shipping. Ordering early is especially important before major holidays.
A custom pet portrait takes longer than a ready-made product because the design is created, reviewed, and produced for your pet alone. Preparing a clear photo and approving the proof promptly will help the process move as smoothly as possible.
